Different Creatures by Daniel Frey

Synopsis: Alan and Emi just slept together, on their first date. Unexpectedly. Now they face the much more difficult task of trying to communicate.

Characters:

  • Alan: Male, 18-25

  • Emi: Female, 18-25

Trainwhistles by Briandaniel Oglesby

Synopsis: It is 1988 and two young lovers, Keester and Jer, have run away from their comfortable homes to take residence in a dirt lot next to the train tracks. But Jer is unhappy.

Characters:

  • Jer: young, gay, gritty, male. Wants to return home.

  • Keester: young, gay, gritty, male. Comfortable in filth and his sexuality.

Rummage by Steven M. Salzman

Synopsis: FOR SALE: One unfashionable polyester dress. The neighborhood iss changing. In the front yard, a downwardly mobile woman sells her worldly belongings. An upwardly mobile youth passes on the sidewalk and wants to engage in commerce. Will economic benefit overcome bias? Or is this a matter of protecting one's heritage?
In Rummage, progress and prejudice collide amidst economic turmoil.

Characters: (Note on ethnicity and race: Color-conscious casting is required. This script was written for an Anglo-American female and African-American male. This exact combination is not required, but the cast should be of obviously disparate ethnic groups.)

  • GLADYS WELCH - sixty-five. Bitter. She hovers on the economic brink of the lowerclass. Her polite facade and manner mask an attitude of superiority and distrust.

  • DA'WAYNE BUEMILLER - twenties. Proud. A little self-righteous and self-empowered. Not sanctimonious, but convinced he's right. A young man coming into his own.

AQUINO, or PEEK-A-BOO GRINGO! by Asher Wyndham

Synopsis: Manuel Aquino takes a passenger for a bumpy ride through Tucson while attempting to persuade his passenger that he's not an illegal immigrant.

Characters:

  • Manuel Aquino, a Mexican-American taxi-driver, late-thirties to early forties

  • Passenger, a young business woman, disinterested in what the driver has to say*

*Only speaks one line. May be played a male passenger. TBD.

Valedictorian by Jeremiah Munsey
 
Synopsis: When a high school senior is chosen as the Valedictorian of her graduating class, the weight of expectation falls squarely on her shoulders.  Will she deliver the generic, "inspirational" farewell address her audience is expecting, or will she tell the truth about her high school years and why she of all people was chosen for this honor?
  
Cast list:

The Ward by Jessica Henderson

Synopsis: A woman, Mary, cradles her child in her arms, telling it about its father, the evils of the world, and what life will be like for it. Another woman, Nancy, enters the room and a dark truth about Mary is revealed.

Characters:

  • Mary: Woman in her early forties. She has been wearied and worn by a tragic life. Her whole manner should suggest exhaustion. She holds her baby close to her chest. We shouldn’t be able to see the baby’s face.
  • Nancy: Woman in her early twenties. She is new to the hospital and new to being a nurse. She is pleasant looking, but any confidence she may have is dissipated by nervous energy.

Original One-Acts:

Flooding the Grand by Brigette Stevenson

Synposis: Flooding the Grand is the story of Kate. In a series of flashbacks, Kate must face her past in order to arrive at a conclusion to the present. The poor choices and actions of her parents and herself leave her with an overwhelming guilt and frustration. She must decide whether to leave her ghosts behind her, or use them as a guide. The play is set during the flooding of the Grand Canyon last March.

Characters:

  • Kate—(age 30-35) Wildlife photographer and in a relationship with Pete. She has fractured ideas about relationships based on her past, and is unable to let go of her guilt from her mother
  • Pete—(age 30-37) Lead park ranger of Grand Canyon National Park. Kate’s long-term boyfriend, he has recently proposed. Frustrated with Kate's unusual behavior, Pete does not know how to understand at first. After her past is exposed, her character makes more sense to him; he wants to help her.
  • Bethany—(age changes through a series of flashbacks, age 9, 26-31) Kate's younger sister. She is naive, in denial about her family's past. She has decided to rebel against her mother’s ideals.
  • Diana—(age 30) The ghost/memory of Kate and Bethany’s mother. Kate sees this apparition often and speaks with her as if she were still alive. She is both a spirit and an atonement of Kate's guilt.
  • Tom—(age 35) Kate and Bethany’s father. A smooth, quiet, manipulative person, with a dark purpose. Kate's favorite parent until she sees the truth.

Things That Fall From the Sky by Brenda Varda

Synopsis: For Melvia everything seems ready to fall from the sky, so she attempts to get through as she usually does  avoiding any possibility of falling objects and only trusting the ever present Colombia Space Shuttle astronauts in her mind.  This all works well until a young astronomer with a guitar disrupts her reveries and gets to heart of her sadness by revealing the real loss that she can never forget.  Can Melvia let go of the fear of chaos and welcome the night sky?

Characters:

  • MELVIA : 17-19 Hispanic college student; fragile but imaginative
  • JAIME:  18-20; college astronomy student; MUST PLAY GUITAR
  • KALPANA CHAWLA: late 20s-30’s; Indian; Astronaut (Columbia)
  • ILAN RAMON: 30’s, first Israeli astronaut, flew on the Columbia
  • WILLIE MCCOOL:  30-40, Captain of the Columbia; straightshooter
  • EDUARDO:  Melvia’s older brother; training to be an astronaut
  • ALMA : Melvia’s mother (40’s); works hard for her children, tough but tired (can be played by the same actress playing Kalpana)
  • NASA ANNOUNCER (voice over at present): prototypical 1960’s NASA announcer
